A Feast for the Senses
January 8, 2009

Since I was a child, I have been enamored of meals that are not only delicious, but are beautifully presented. I swoon over desserts that are served on a plate that has swirly syrup designs on it, or fruits that are carved into works of art. I dream of one day owning a patisserie… although I can barely bake cookies! Actually, I’m getting pretty good at the cookies, but that’s about it.
To this day, if I prepare a meal for my son, the foods will be organized on the plate in some sort of lovely scheme or pattern, with a diversity of colors and textures. I want to take that extra step, put in that extra bit of time, to make the plate delightful to look at, as well as tasty (and, hopefully, nutritious). I put a little sprinkle of Love in every meal I serve him; it’s the secret ingredient… and he knows it.
In my opinion, it is not enough for food to be tasty OR pretty; it has to have the right balance of both to really nurture the soul. The taste and aroma provide comfort and pleasure, while the tender, loving care and effort that goes into presentation convey the love and passion the chef put into the food.
I believe, when I eat these beautiful and delicious foods, I receive a little part of that love, that passion, from the chef’s soul to mine. These meals are truly a feast for the senses–all six of them!
