Young, Confused Iris

Date January 9, 2009

Emerging Iris

I found this little youngling in my garden today. Right now she’s just a bulb and a couple of small leaves, some of them crinkled by untimely frost. She sits among a pile of withered grass, and brittle branches from autumns past.

But I can’t help wonder if this “young lady” knows that she is the most beautiful iris in my garden?

Everything needed to produce that perfect flower is already there. With the proper conditions: warmth, rain, nutrients, and patience, she will soon show us just how magnificent she truly is.

I know this, because I was fortunate enough to be around to witness the last life cycle for this bulb… but does she know it?

I wonder if, like humans, she judges herself harshly because she doesn’t look like much now and sits in an undesirable home?

I wonder if she gets embarrassed because the tips of her leaves are a little crinkled from sprouting too soon?

I wonder if she looks up at the mighty oaks surrounding her and doubts that she will ever be anything quite that awe-inspiring? Does she realize that tiny acorn beside her aims to become a mighty oak, and has a much longer wait to fulfill his ambitions? And yet, he seems to be smiling!

Does she envy the weeds that still wear occasional flowers?

Does she grow impatient with herself because somewhere, deep down, she knows that she is more than we see, but no matter what she tries, she can’t show the world just yet?

Does she realize there are too many variables that she cannot control?

All she needs to do is care for herself as well as she can, have a little patience, and let her life unfold as it was meant to. Her exquisite beauty is already there. In due time, it will be evident to us all.

Nature has a way of just allowing life to take place, rather than struggling to control it.

I do wonder if one day humans, like plants, will let Nature take its course, and wait patiently for their inherent beauty to be shared with the world?

What do you think?

Hey, David! This was always my favorite one. It kind of got overlooked and buried, because it was early on, but I really like it. I’m glad you do, too.

    Thanks!

I just discovered this post and it really is a wonderful piece of writing. It hits so many things right on the head and in such a beautiful way. I will never look at an iris bulb in quite the same way ever again!

Ha! I wondered what that was… thought it might be a secret code for me to decipher. ;-)

    I’m glad you liked it!

    Hi Lisis,
This is beautifully written. As I was reading it, I just kept thinking of my own life, and how I – all too often – think some of these thoughts. How easy it can be to forget about our own true flowers, deep within us, and how unique and amazing they are.

Letting nature take it’s course…and I think of how we, as humans, have a difficult time fully allowing our heart to shine. Maybe it feels vulnerable (it does for me), scary (yep, that too), and yet – all so good and right. Deeply moving, this is for me today….

    Lisis Sweetie,
This is so beautifully written. Something about this made me feel like…it was just written for me. Let all the pain go away..and just BE. I love it. Your words truly just flow.
Lessons from nature…priceless. Really we can learn from everyone and everything thats around us…if we just choose to open our eyes and see.
    Lots of love

Hi, Lance and Zeenat! It’s so neat to see you here, on one of my very first posts. It is kinda like traveling back in time, and extending our friendship in both directions on the time line… a reminder that you have always been there (even if I didn’t know it yet).

This was really one of my favorites because, when I wrote it, I didn’t even know what a blog was. I was thinking only of the Iris, the Oak, and my life… how impatient I can get. The result was an uncensored flow of thoughts and emotions that I can really connect with to this day.

Thank you for stopping by here and sharing this moment with me. :)
