Fellowship Fridays: All About Family

Date March 6, 2009

family

As many of you know, I am fairly new to the blogging world, having just started this year. I wanted to find a way to share everything I have learned about happiness and inner peace with those who are looking for answers. If I can help or inspire even one person with this blog, then it is worth doing.

One thing I have noticed about blogging on this subject is that there is a whole community of bloggers and readers “out there” that is caring, thoughtful, and anxious to help. So I would like to start a tradition of using my Fridays to share with you some of my favorite posts from other bloggers. I’m calling this “Fellowship Fridays” in hopes that it will bring us closer together.

Today’s theme is Family, and here are five great posts on the subject:

1. Discipline vs. Spanking from Love to Spare

This is a great article on a wonderful new blog that is all about Love. I don’t mean puppy love; I mean genuine expressions of true love between people. This article makes a convincing case that loving discipline is preferable to spanking when trying to teach children how to behave. I happen to agree with this theory and have seen wonderful results from it.

2. How We (Almost) Gave Up T.V. from Serene Journey

We all know we should watch less T.V. (or none at all!), but giving it up is not so simple. This post explores some of the positive side-effects of quitting T.V. and offers helpful tips about how to reduce your couch-potato time. We have tried occasional “no electronics” days in my house and found we spent a lot more time interacting as a family. Quitting might be drastic, but limiting is achievable.

3. 12 Bold Ideas For A Happy Marriage from Simple Marriage

This blog is quickly becoming the place to go for great marriage and relationship advice. In this post, they offer 12 helpful tips to improve any relationship. My personal favorite is #4: “Maintain a fundamental belief that your spouse is worthy of honor and respect.” I think if we do this, everything else will work out fine.

4. Grounds For Divorce from The Pioneer Woman

Never a dull moment on this beautiful and entertaining blog. Through great photography and wonderfully personal posts, we come to know and love this city-turned-country damsel and her family. I cannot say enough good things about the amazing pictures on this site. Sometimes I feel like I am right there with them. She even gives some great advice on how the rest of us can improve our pictures in the Photography section.

5. How To Be A Great Dad from Zen Habits

Zen Habits has a lot of great articles, as most of you know. But this has to be one of my all-time favorites because it shows a dad that really loves his family and wants to be the best dad he can be. I see a lot of mom advice out there, but not so much on the tender side of being a dad. Oh, and I especially like Tip #12. All you dads out there… pay attention.

What I like about sharing this list on Friday is that it gives you some wonderful reading material for the weekend.

Have a Great One!!!

Lisis, what a great idea! Fellowship Fridays! And what a lovely name.

I am so happy to share community with you, and so honored that you included my post on your list! Thank you!

I’ve got a meeting to make – so I need to run. But I’ll be back.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Lisis,
Fellowship Fridays is a great idea with a fantastic name! I love it! Thanks for including Michael’s article on Discipline vs. Spanking…it’s message is near and dear to our hearts and we too have experienced great results from disciplining our children lovingly and without spanking. I grew up in a pretty violent, extremely hierarchical culture where even the wives are “spanked” to “discipline them, and yet somehow I always felt that spanking was wrong. I remember being 3 years old and lying about the marks on my body because I didn’t want people to think ill of my mother for doing such a terrible thing.

The other articles sound great too; I’m looking forward to delving into them and browsing around the blogs. Thanks for the positive weekend reading list!
You have a great one too!

@ Michael: Consider it my contribution to “The Age of We.” And what would a collection of posts about Family be without a contribution from Michael and Acooba!? Of course you’re on this list… it all starts with you!

@ Acooba: You are welcome. Every time I hear from you I just wanna give you a big hug. I wonder if there is a WordPress plugin that lets me do that?

    ;-)

    Hi Lisis,

Great idea about Fellowship Fridays! Good for you. We need more fellowship and I am happy to see that my comment about the “Age of We” has taken hold. :)

I loved all the articles that you included. I loved what you said about marriage in number 3. I think you are right that our spouses are worthy of love and respect. In my mind, that means accepting them as they are and not trying to change them into what we think they should be.

    Hi, Nadia!

It’s so nice to see you here… there’s always room for a Happy Lotus on this page! I’m glad you liked the articles and the concept. Your comment about the “Age of We” really got me thinking about how I can do my part to get us there.

For those of you out of the loop, we are talking about a comment Nadia made on Michael’s post: http://lovetospare.com/2009/03/05/brace-for-impact. Check it out so you can start thinking about YOUR part in creating The Age of We.

    Thanks!

    Hi Lisis!

You are so sweet….thank you! :) I am adding you to my blogroll which is not up yet but will be this weekend. As for doing your part, you are! By just having this blog and how you are in your life with your loved ones, is a great thing. I used to think that in order to make a difference it had to be huge but I am learning that a person can make a difference in so many ways.

Fellowship Fridays Love it! Thanks for including us on your list of finds for the week. I missed Michael’s post on discipline when poking around his site so thanks for bringing it to my attention. Have a great weekend and a great time in Costa Rica!
