My Seven Vices or Virtues

Date April 7, 2009

Lisis

This is me… Lisis.  In case you were wondering, it is pronounced LEE-cease (accent on the first syllable). Last week, my mischievous friend Michael, from Love To Spare, tagged me to post seven facts about myself, while following these rules:

  1. Link to your original tagger and list these rules in your post.
  2. Share seven facts about yourself in the post.
  3. Tag seven people at the end of your post by leaving their names and links to their blogs.
  4. Let them know they’ve been tagged.

I suppose I can handle this. So, without further ado, here are my Seven Vices or Virtues (you decide which is which):

1. Astrology – I don’t know much about it, but I know what I am. I’m a Libra Water Ox (born October, 1973) which explains three things about me: I seek balance. I always find a way to get where I want to go. I work hard when I have to, but I’d rather lay around in a grassy field when I can.

2. Travel – I was born in Honduras, and lived in Costa Rica until I was 12. I went from Jr. High to college in Southern California, and Grad school in Georgia. I’ve visited a LOT of countries on several continents, but I yearn for a trip to Italy.  Not just any trip, though. I want to go to all the major cities, lots of famous sites, and see Tiziano Ferro and Andrea Bocelli in concert (though not in the SAME concert).

3. Ice cream – I am madly in love with Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream. Each little pint is packed with wholesome goodness, positive karma, love for the environment, insanely delicious ingredients thrown together with no apparent rhyme or reason… and about 1,000 calories to keep you warm in the winter. I try to forget that last part.

4. Reading – I love to read complex books that educate and challenge me. Some of my favorite authors are: Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Jens Peter Jacobsen, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Lou von Salome: The Woman Who Inspired Freud, Nietzsche, and Rilke My Seven Vices or Virtues. On the other hand, I enjoy watching silly movies that don’t require me to think: Airplane, Old School, Meet the Parents, American Pie, and my super fave: O Brother, Where Art Thou? My Seven Vices or Virtues

5. Organization – In college I was so OCD that my own mother did not like to visit me. She said it wasn’t any fun having me follow her around, cleaning up her messes. My apartment looked like a museum. It’s fair to say I don’t have that problem anymore… I’m so proud of my messy house and how hard I work to keep it that way!

6. Theodor Seuss GeiselDr. Seuss is my hero, and that is NOT an exaggeration. The man was a genius.

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

He wrote THE best books for teaching kids that reading can be fun, while weaving in all sorts of social messages that I happen to agree with. My all-time favorite: The Lorax. Come on… do we really need “thneeds”? I’d much rather have the trees.

7. Aviation – My greatest passion has always been flying, but I haven’t flown in 10 years (since my parents had their accident). I want to fly, but truth be told… I’m a little scared to. Fortunately for my pride, I can’t afford to fly anyway. The saying, “If God had wanted man to fly, He would’ve given him more money” certainly applies in my case.

I’m hoping, though, that one of these days my bank account will force me to overcome my fear so I can take to the skies again. When I do, I’m flying out to meet all the great people I’ve met through blogging. Consider yourselves warned.

There are so many of my favorite bloggers that have already been tagged for this game. So here are seven that intrigue me, and that I hope won’t mind playing along:

Porsidan (Jay Schryer)

Mommy Mystic  (Lisa Erickson)

Thinking Park (Vikum Jayarathne)

Critical Thoughts (V.J. Krishna)

Present Outlook (Julian Rosser)

Ivan Campuzano (Ivan Campuzano)

Si Dawson (Si Dawson)

If you DO mind, take it out on Michael.

It’s my first time visiting this blog and I’m glad to come to a post that introduces more about yourself. I like that you said ice cream contains a lot of positive karma! Heartily agreed! You see….I just had a cone some 10 minutes ago…no kidding….not Ben and Jerry’s though. So there you go…it is my weakness too!

    Hi, Evelyn!

I’m so glad you stopped by here, because I loved visiting your site for the first time yesterday. In fact I liked it so much that I am including one of your posts in my Fellowship Fridays this week (The Act of Forgivenenss for a Difficult Past) and added you to my blogroll right away. Now my readers can get to know YOU on the same day they are getting to know ME.

Great post! I love these tag things where I learn more about the bloggers writing the blogs I visit. I also love the idea of seven virtues/vices. A lot of things we do can go both ways. For example, I am SUPER organized. This is great at work. This is great when I have to choose an outfit from my color-coded closet. However, it can definitely drive people nuts sometimes. It’s good to think about the good and bad sides of things so I like this vice/virtue idea.

Hey, PositivelyPresent! I should have tagged YOU so I could learn your name! ;-) I am a big believer that there are two sides to everything and it’s best to avoid the extremes. Thanks for stopping by!

I hope you fly again – I think it’s really cool that you know how to pilot a plane.

I love ice cream also, but I’ll take any of the super fatty brands. :)

    Hi Lisis,

Now wonder we are friends…I see so many common interests. :) BTW, I was telling Jacob the other day that you knew how to fly and he was like “that is so cool”. And he does not say that about many people! :)

  • Mischievous Friend of Lisis April 7, 2009 at 8:23 pm

    Hey Lisis,

Wow, I’ve been mispronouncing your name all this time. LOL! Who knew?

You know, of all the authors you mentioned, the only one I’m familiar with is Dr. Seuss. I wonder what that says about me?

Anyway, thanks for sharing a little bit more about yourself, LEE-cease. Boy, that’s gonna take some getting use to (now that I have in my head all wrong). ;-)

  • Vikum (Thinking Park) April 7, 2009 at 8:42 pm

    Hi Lee-cease :) ,
you know what? It takes some time to pronounce that. ;)
I’m glad you’ve tagged me. This sounds like a cool game which we can give a chance to know bloggers around us.
Ok. I’m gonna join the game.( I haven’t mentioned about my self even in my “about me ” section. hehe…… :) )

  • Lisis April 7, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Hey, my mischievous friend! I know, I hadn’t even thought about the pronounciation issue until David asked me about it. Then I realized there’s probably a bunch of people who have no idea how to say it. Problem solved.

As for being familiar only with Dr. Seuss… I think it probably says that you are a wonderful daddy. :-)

  • Lisis April 7, 2009 at 8:49 pm

@ Vikum: I know, you are very mysterious in your About Me… that’s why I figured I’d tag you and see what I can get out of you. I’m looking forward to finding out more About You.

As for the name, just keep in mind that the “i” in my name is a Costa Rican “i” so it has to have that “ee” sound. No one ever mispronounced my name until I moved to the States. It’s been a disaster ever since. ;-)

I was wondering how to pronounce your name .. and now I know!

And if you do manage to make it to Italy, do let me know, I’m a short flight away. It’s my favourite country so far. Whenever I go I immediately feel at home with the people, the culture, history, landscape, climate, wine … I could go on. It’s my ambition to live in Italy some time. I was in Rome last summer and had the great pleasure of seeing Leonard Cohen in concert, second row seats, nice small outdoor venue! Pure heaven. Jealous?

I’m so jealous of both of you. Although I can easily get some Neapolitan Dynamite of my own… but the trip to Italy? That’s gonna take some doing. Well, Ian, it’s a date. If I can hitchhike my way across the Atlantic, and make it to Italy, you’re coming out to show me around.

Hi, Jennifer! Welcome to Q4B!! Phish Food is one of my other all-time favorites… and Everything But The Kitchen Sink, and… (pretty much all of them!) Maybe one day we’ll go to Italy together and see how their gelatos stack up against Ben & Jerry’s. ;-)

I’m glad you’re here, and I hope you’ll stick around. I look forward to learning more about you. I am heading over to your blog now…
