Save the Planet, and My Truffula Tree!

“I am the Lorax.  I speak for the trees.” –Dr. Seuss

“But those trees! Those trees! Those Truffula Trees!

All my life I’d been searching for trees such as these.

The touch of their tufts was much softer than silk.

And they had the sweet smell of fresh butterfly milk.”

(Dr. Seuss, in The Lorax)

This is my very own Truffula Tree

Please take a moment to notice the small, greenish-blue bird perched on one of the branches near the middle. He was one of about ten different birds, of various vibrant colors, who visited this tree in a matter of minutes, while I took pictures of it. Aside from the stunning little birds, there were bees in almost every blossom.

Yeah, that’s right… the birds AND the bees were mingling in this tree right in front of me!

I think most people consider that this is a water apple tree (a certain kind of apple in Costa Rica that tastes, well… like water.) But I know better. I know this is the very tree Dr. Seuss had in mind when he wrote The Lorax Save the Planet, and My Truffula Tree!. This is the tree that is home to many amazing species of animals. I am so lucky to have one… but only one. It sits on my dad’s farm, in Costa Rica’s southern zone.

Today, Earth Day, would have been my dad’s 64th birthday. When I remember him I think of this tree, and the many others that sit on his 50 acres at the foot of Chirripo Mountain, and how much he loved this land. He loved it for the views, the climate, the fruit trees, the wild life, and the sense of peace he felt when he was there.

What is to Become of My Truffula Tree Now?

My brother recently took Jeff and me to see the farm and figure out what our options are. Should we move there? Do we want to develop the land and sell it off? Can we rent it out to someone? We talked to some of the neighbors and others in the region who had similar properties in order to get ideas. We got a lot of ideas.

In the end, we settled on our favorite… we plan to use part of it for a government assisted reforestation project, and we will have the wilder part designated as a Biological Reserve to protect the natural habitat of some of the southern zone’s endangered species. We will still have access to the house, but the remainder of the property will be doing its part to Save the Planet.

So, in the spirit of Earth Day and wonderful memories of Costa Rica, I thought I would provide a couple of links in case YOU feel inspired to do a little something to help the planet too. You could volunteer your time to do some hands-on work with the Cloudbridge Reforestation Program. Or, if you prefer, you can always donate funds to the Ecology Fund, which has all sorts of ways to help save the planet. I am not affiliated with either of these programs in any way, nor do I stand to benefit personally from your efforts or contributions… except that the Truffula Tree you are saving may be my very own.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” –Dr. Seuss

Are you doing something special to help save the planet? Do you have suggestions for the rest of us?

Lisis, This was fantastic. I’m so proud and happy for you for doing this. I’ve never been to Costa Rica but it is on my list of places I want to go. I love nature and I love you for contributing to this project. Thanks!

Good on you for commiting to such a project Lisis. Costa Rica certainly looks a wonderful place.

Personaly I am not undertaking large projects to help save the planet, but I do lots of the smaller things that I hope add up to making a decent contribution. These are things such as growing our own food (not enough to be completly self sufficient, but a large chunk of it), recycling as much of our waste as possible, encouraging wild life in to our garden, and trying to get our produce from local shops to help support local businesses and farmers.

I also own a tree in a local forrest, I know it isn’t much, but I plan in the future to buy more and help protect it from any development plans.

    Hey, guys! Happy Earth Day!!!

@ Stephen: If you love nature, then you definitely need to visit Costa Rica. As they like to say, it’s “100% Natural, No Artificial Ingredients.” You’ll LOVE it!

@ Garry: I think all the little things you do on a daily basis really make a huge difference. If every one of us did a few little things that would really add up. I love the idea of growing your own food, especially when it’s the simple things (like your dandelion soup!) I also like the “adopt a tree” approach to reforestation. Maybe I could do something like that on my dad’s farm and have some of the trees be sponsored by people around the world… who can then go stay at the farm and visit their tree! Then we can all have a Truffula tree of our own.

    =-)

What a great and wonderful idea! That is so awesome!! I’ve often wondered what my brother and I will do with my dad’s farm in Alabama when the time comes. I’ve considered using it as a spiritual retreat for nature lovers, but I like this plan even better! Of course, there’s not many endangered species in Alabama, nor any reforestation projects, but I think letting some of the land go “wild” again is a great idea!

Kudos! Reforestation is sorely needed. Your choice has much integrity.

If you care to read the post that will link when I hit submit, you’ll have a clear idea why it’s so important to preserve trees.

@ Jay: I don’t know if the deer in Alabama will ever be considered “endangered,” but I do know they will be thankful if they can exist safely on your dad’s land. We have about 6 deer that hang out in the woods behind my house, and I’m so glad they have at least a little space to run around without danger. So… go “wild” with your dad’s land.

@ Pamir: I just read (and stumbled) The Sainthood Of Sequoias on your site. What a beautiful story… and sad… and inspiring… When that tree fell in the forest, we all heard it, and continue to hear it still. Thank you for writing such a beautiful tribute!

Wow! What a beautiful tree! That looks a lot like the tree in the book/movie. I love that story, The Lorax. It’s such a good one and such a great story to bring up today. Thanks!

Congratulations Lisis what a fantastic decision! One that will continue to give generation after generation and provide a sanctuary for a lot of precious little critters. I just love this idea and glad you could all agree on something so great.

I’m glad to know that the little bird in your picture will always have a home. : ) I can’t wait to go back with you some day to visit the Truffula Tree and see more of Costa Rica.

What a great decision, Lisis. The wildlife will be pleased, I’m sure. Costa Rica looks beautiful. I long to visit somewhere as green and lush with vegetation. Where I live it gets fatally cold here, and we don’t even have leaves budding on trees yet. Nice day though, and I’m going to take my bike for a spin for the first time this year in honor of Earth Day.

I love The Lorax. One of my favorite books growing up. Costa Rica does a solid job of preserving their environment. Enjoyed traveling there. Nice photo.
