Spirit of Adventure Mondays at Quest for Balance are about finding ways for all of us to get excited about life. In fact, on my “Why Read This?” page, I use the following description:
“Whether we find happiness through grand adventures, or seek it in every-day places, we all want less pain and more joy. Quest for Balance is a place where people can be reminded that finding lasting happiness and inner peace is not only achievable, but surprisingly simple–for all of us!”
It is easy to fall into the trap of writing only about Grand Adventures, since they are thrilling, exciting and inspiring. But the reality is, not all of us can go on those adventures. Or even if we can, most of us won’t be doing it full-time. So, how do we get excited about our regular day-to-day lives? How do we fit adventures in when we are constrained by schedules, budgets, and other inconvenient circumstances?

We could make a list of what we think we need to be happy: “I can only be happy if…” Write down the things you want and the things you do not want. Where did these ideas come from? Are they reality? Or are they only your notions? If you are committed to a particular notion of happiness, you do not have much chance to be happy.

Chuang Tse’s story, The Horse, has been around for generations, illustrating the idea that there is no event that is either good or bad, lucky or unlucky, fortunate or unfortunate. Everything in life just happens, and we don’t always get to know why. I love the story. I’ve shared it and retold it countless times. But it never really hit home for me until this week. Maybe that’s because the original is a parable about a fictional farmer and his son. This week I read a new version of the story, a true life rendition that brought me to tears. All of a sudden I finally got it.
