Fellowship Fridays: A League of Gentlemen

Date June 5, 2009

League Of Gentlemen

Last Friday we compiled a list of wonderful women bloggers. I named five female bloggers who were some of my first blogging friends, and many of you added several fascinating women to the list.

I promised today would be about the guys. As I understand it, there are lot more men who blog than women, so coming up with a list of great male bloggers might be too easy a task. Instead, let’s come up with a list of amazing bloggers who are also true gentlemen. For those of you who don’t know what that means, here’s a description by John Walter Wayland:

The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe.

Sounds like a tall order, right?

Well I am fortunate enough to be able to say I know at least five who fit that description perfectly. I’ll list only five, for the sake of tradition. These guys are supremely talented writers, caring and compassionate souls, wonderful friends and… without a doubt, true gentlemen. If you don’t know them already, I urge you to visit their sites and introduce yourself.

1.  David at Raptitude

Ask him about his kettlebells.

2.  Jay at Porsidan

 He’s a sensitive Viking!

3.  Roger at A Content Life

He’ll get you on the mindful road to happiness.

4.  Ian at Quantum Learning

His sense of humor is priceless.

5.  Stephen at The Rat Race Trap

If you care about your brain, you’ll read his blog.

Speaking of amazing men…

Twenty years ago, one man stood up for what he believed in, and the world noticed. I would like to share the video of this man making a difference, set to one of my favorite John Lennon songs… Imagine. If you can’t view the video, click here.

So how about it? Do you know any gentlemen bloggers? Perhaps YOU are one of them… this would be a great time for shameless self promotion. Don’t be shy!

Thanks!!!

Aww, Lisis! Thanks so much for including me here! And in such great company, too! These (other) guys are truly inspiring, and I’m honored to know them. One more that I would include would be Albert at Urban Monk. He’s a true gentleman, too…when he’s not busy being a pirate on Facebook ;)

Case in point: this morning my post refused to publish and Jay came to my rescue with a solution to get it out there. My knight in shining armor!

You’re right, Albert is another wonderful gentleman blogger, and absolutely should be on this list.

    :)

  • Roger - A Content Life June 5, 2009 at 8:09 am

    Lisis,

Thank you so much for the link!!!

To be honest, I’m not sure I fit ALL the criteria of a True Gentleman. :)

Well, Roger… here’s the loophole: you don’t have to meet them ALL at the same time.

    ;-)

  • Albert | UrbanMonk.Net June 5, 2009 at 8:45 am

I’m a regular reader of all these blogs Lisis, great stuff. And thanks for the vote Jay ;) I don’t think I’m a gentleman anymore (maybe I used to be) after I see all the bounties people put on my head for randomly attacking them as a pirate on Facebook! Some people REALLY hate me there! Hahah!

@Lisis -As always, at your service, milady. I’m happy to help whenever I can.

@Albert – I think that’s why we like to play games like that, my friend. It’s an escape from having to be such good guys all the time ;)

Albert… pay no heed to Jay, he’s got “issues.” For the most part, he’s harmless. You’re definitely still a gentleman.

  • Chania Girl June 5, 2009 at 8:59 am

Oooo, so many men I already know here. Congraulations, guys!

I’d like to add another gentleman to the list, Jared @ Spiritual Zen: http://www.spiritualzen.net/. Great, great, great guy!

And, of course, I love Lance @The JungleofLife: http://www.jungleoflife.com/.

I’m flattered, Lisis, thank you for calling me a gentleman. People don’t use that word much anymore, but I really appreciate it.

You’re right… I was beginning to think chivalry was dead, until I met you boys. Now I’m convinced there must be others like you “out there.”

    Let’s find them, shall we?
    ;-)

PS: One other who has come to my rescue is Glen at PluginID. He should definitely be on the list.

  • Lisis June 5, 2009 at 10:15 am

Hey, Carla! Sorry… you got tied up for moderation. Thanks for adding Jared and Lance, both wonderful guys!!!

    =-)

    Hi Lisis,

Congrats to all the guys who made your list. :)

I would also add Albert of Urban Monk and Lance over at Jungle of Life. Those two dudes are really awesome and genuine.

Great list, and quote. I love the phrase “who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another”. We should all take such a gentlemanly approach to power and responsibility. And the video is amazing – such courage in the name of justice and freedom is humbling itself.

I second (or third) votes for Albert of Urban Monk and Lance over at Jungle of Life. In the spirit of sharing, here’s three more I’d recommend (after last week I’m a little nervous to post links, but I’ll give it a go:)

    ggw_bach at 100 Musical Footsteps – http://www.100musicalfootsteps.ggwbach.com/
Paul at Original Faith – http://www.originalfaith.com/blog/
Jonathan at Enlighten Your Day http://enlightenyourday.com/

    Have a great weekend!

  • Glen Allsopp June 6, 2009 at 6:04 am

    Hey Lisis, cool list.

I am aware of a couple of them but not all.

My two recommendations would have to be UpgradeReality.com and Unleashreality.com (I won’t post links because of Akisment). I wouldn’t mind if every other blog I read stopped typing, as long as those two keep going

    Cheers,
    Glen

Lisis, I rarely think of myself as a true gentleman and so much enjoy seeing my name on your list! I will walk around today with a gentlemanly expression on my face, looking for damsels in distress I can save. LOL

Ian | Quantum Learning’s latest post… In search of honesty

  • Lisis June 6, 2009 at 6:35 am

Ian, I thought that was what you did every day! ;)

Hey, Glen and Lisa, I really appreciate you adding new names to the list. Of the five you added, I had only heard of one. And Glen, with THAT recommendation, you’ve convinced me those two sites are worth investing some time in. Wow!!!

    :)

  • Glen Allsopp June 6, 2009 at 5:42 pm

Haha, the recommendation is partly based on the fact that they are two of my best (in person) friends. One is a model trying to find the meaning of life, the other had his own TV documentary, has been featured in Cosmo and more.

What I love about them is that they aren’t all pretty and formatted like I feel my blog posts have to be, they actually have something very in common with you…they’re real. I just love how honest and open they are, even if they are just pondering ideas, I’m sure you’ll think the same :)

  • Donnell King June 7, 2009 at 7:19 pm

I’ve been privileged to interact with Lisis several times via email in the last few weeks. Let’s just say my positive impression goes beyond the blog.

I don’t think I qualify as a gentleman, but I have a current blog that looks at communication and higher education (King’s Corner) and one that hasn’t updated in awhile but is closer to my heart (Guiding Your Special Needs Child and its associated Web site, TrisomyKidsAreSpecial). Perhaps one would be of interest to readers here, without taking too much advantage of Lisis’ kind offer of self-promotion. Who knows, maybe I’ll find the wherewithal to start updating the Special Needs blog again.

  • Lisis June 7, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Donnell… I am SO glad you did take me up on the call for self-promotion! I actually expected a lot MORE of it on this post. I love finding new and interesting blogs, so I really appreciate you taking a moment to share your blogs with us here.

Oh, and by the way, Mr. King… the feeling is mutual. You, sir, are indeed a gentleman! :)

  • Lance June 16, 2009 at 8:36 pm

    Hi Lisis,
It’s great to be here today…although…I kind of feel like a schmuck for taking so long to get here.

Thank you!! – Chania Girl, Nadia/Happy Lotus, and Lisa/MommyMystic – you are all way way too kind to me! (I’m a very happy guy though!)!!

Lisis – wonderful list you have here of many true gentlemen – it’s an honor to be mentioned beside them.
