Fellowship Fridays: Free Blogging Blueprint
June 19, 2009
Today’s Fellowship Fridays post is a little different because it is about one blogger and his gift to the blogging community. So, if you aren’t a blogger, you may want to skip this one… unless you want to know some of the crazy stuff we go through to create our blogs. The rest of you, who are bloggers, may want to take a moment to download and read Glen’s free ebook, Blogging Blueprint.
FOR THE RECORD: I don’t earn any money from this review, or from any clicks or links. Just sharing info.
Glen Allsop is a fantastic young man, whose blog (PluginID) has made quite a name for itself in the Personal Development genre. But this isn’t his first blog, and he’s no newbie on the net. So when Glen released his free Blogging Blueprint ebook, I read it right away. Unlike most people out there teaching others how to succeed as a blogger, Glen has actually done it. This guy makes more money in a month than some people make in a whole year! Not that it’s about money, though… he also provides insanely useful content to a devoted audience that is growing by the second.
Glen’s Blogging Blueprint is a book in three parts:
1. Glen’s story
I’ll let him tell it, but the quick version is: he’s 20, has several years of experience with blogs and websites, and he makes a ton of cash at it. In fact, he is offering this e book for free because, as he says, he is doing so well, he doesn’t need any more money! This guy knows what he’s talking about.
2. How to build a blog
This section has so much useful content, I don’t even know where to begin. He shares interesting little secrets, like the use of “No Follow” to redirect search engine traffic to your main pages, making the secondary pages (like About Me) less relevant. He points out that selling text links on your blog decreases your Google page rank. So be mindful of what you put on your site.
Aside from the usual reason to guest post (exposure to a larger audience), Glen reminds us that it is also a great strategy for obtaining valuable back links to our own blogs. And one of my favorite tips in the book: be real. Too many bloggers try to hide their true identity and present objective, but impersonal, information that readers cannot truly connect to.
Glen describes some of the types of content that tend to do well: lists, resource posts, viral content, and unique content. Of the four, I’d have to say the only one I do consistently at Quest For Balance is unique content; I do try to put my own spin on most topics. He says, “If you can change people’s assumptions, then you are onto a winner.” I’d like to think that’s what I’ve done with posts like these:
- Personal Labels Do More Harm than Good
- What I Learned from a Stripper
- Personal Development is a Prisoner’s Dilemma
3. Tips for blogging success
One of his main tips is being transparent, honest, open and real. I love these qualities, and he does a great job of showing us how it’s done by sharing his own stories. It blew me away that at one time he actually sold PluginID, since he had become frustrated with the slow growth process. I’m so glad and inspired that he decided to buy it back and keep working at it.
In closing, he includes tips for getting back links… some of them simple, others a little above my head. In truth, I find it a bit discouraging to know there’s a whole system, or game to this that I may never understand. I guess I’d better stick to creating unique content, and forming lasting relationships with my readers.
Glen, thanks for the wonderful gift to our community!
Have you read Glen Allsop’s Blogging Blueprint? Do you have your own tips for blogging success? What are your greatest blogging challenges?
Thanks!!!

Hey Lisis, thanks a lot for your review. I’m really glad you enjoyed the eBook and could take something away from it.
Don’t worry about that too much, it will make sense in time

Thanks, Glen! I really do think it’s a fantastic resource you’ve put out there for the blogging community. I hope others will be able to learn from it as I have.
I’ll tell you, sometimes I worry that as soon as I figure out how to use the current systems and tools, the technology will change again. It’s a pretty fast paced environment… for us “older folk.”
You did a great job on this ebook, Glen!
Ahhh excellent choice! Truly, Glen’s book is most helpful. I have enjoyed it very much!

Hi Lisis,
I’ve been a semi-frequent reader at Glen’s site, although I’ve never stumbled upon his ebook. Anyway, just downloaded it now, and am reading through it – excellent stuff! And his site is just chock-full of great info too. Thanks for highlighting the ebook – it looks to be a great resource!
Lance´s last blog ..Old Hat, New Hat
I’ve read lots of these “How To Blog” ebooks, but never shared any of them with my fellow bloggers because they are all pretty much the same. What I like about Glen’s is that it has a more personal feel… like he’s just a guy sharing his story with the rest of us. We can choose to learn from his experience, or not; but he’s putting it out there for us.
If his personal success is any indication, he knows what he’s talking about.
Hey Lisis. I have never read the book but I do look forward to it. Thank you for sharing.
Happy Weekend.
Tammy-Cricket´s last blog ..Simple Things…
Hey, Tammy! I hope you’ll enjoy it. You know, every time I see your gravatar I can’t help but smile. I think it reminds me of my childhood… the Jimminy Cricket days.
Have a GREAT weekend!!
Lisis you`re so nice. I downloaded it, but haven`t started reading. Today I will, I`m sure I`ll enjoy and use it since I wanna be a blogger when I grow up

Rosa´s last blog ..Después de la tormenta – After the storm
I also read that book yesterday and I’ve found it to be highly valuable.
Oscar´s last blog ..How to stop procrastination
Ay, Rosita! You know good and well you’re not gonna grow up! Who are you trying to fool?
Nah, you’re twice the blogger the rest of us are, since you’re writing all your posts in two languages!
Hey, Oscar… thanks for sharing your opinion here, so the others don’t think I was paid to write a glowing review. Although, Glen, it’s not too late for an elaborate bribe.
That`s what I love about this beautiful blogging community, that it`s all about SHARING!
Lisis, I don`t know what to say, you mocked me and complimented at the same time. how do you do it? Thanks, I guess! Btw I know you`re a midget too
Rosa´s last blog ..Después de la tormenta – After the storm
It’s the “back-handed insult wrapped in a compliment” technique, which you’ll learn to master when you get married. Although, you’re getting pretty good at it already!
“back-handed insult wrapped in a compliment†~Proof positive that women are evil.
Jay Schryer´s last blog ..Mindful Meditation Monday – Wrap Up
Hahah, are you scared Jay? Men do that too
Rosa´s last blog ..Después de la tormenta – After the storm
Evil?! I’m thinking it’s far more evil to throw out plain old insults.
Women are nurturing and kind. That’s why we take the extra step to delicately wrap our insults in easily-digested compliments. Mary Poppins 101: “a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.”
Everybody knows THAT.
Lisis,
Thanks for informative review.
I see so many free e-books and I don’t have time to read them all. I’ll definitely take a look at this one.
Roger – A Content Life´s last blog ..8 Thinking Traps
Good review. I have been too busy this week to read it, but it’s up next to be studied this weekend. I’m looking forward to it.
Thanks guys! I know there’s a TON of information out there, but if you’re going to learn how to blog you might as well learn from someone who is succeeding at it. Obviously, problogger is always a super valuable source, but it’s nice sometimes to hear some other success stories.
And James, welcome to Q4B!
Man, when I noticed there were 18 comments, I knew there had to be some off-topic conversation haha

Glen Allsopp´s last blog ..BloggingBlueprint: Your Free Guide to Blogging Success
Glen, if comments are OPEN on Q4B, there’s always bound to be some off-topic conversation going on. My comments section is completely ADD… “in the most delightful way!”
With so much information about blogging out there today, it is wonderful to have someone (Lisis!) point me in a meaningful direction. Here’s a big thank you to Glen for putting his ebook out there for us; I am looking forward to reading it!
Peace-Lori
Thank you, Lori!
See, Glen… LORI was ON TOPIC, like a good girl. She knows how to focus amid endless distractions. Someone’s gotta keep us on track!
Maybe it is because when God was passing out brains, I thought he said “trains” and asked for a one-track?
(ha)
Thanks again, Glen and Lisis! Sorry–had to contribute to the ADD side of things. : )
Excellent, Lisis! This is exactly the type of information I have been looking for. (One look at my blog and you’ll see I can use it!)
You are awesome, as always.
Mr. Nuggets´s last blog ..The Value of Good Friends
I read through the whole book, which was not only helpful but interesting. Great story, Glen. I feel like I know you a little bit better by reading it.
I think it’s important to note that both beginning and intermediate bloggers will find information of value here. The information in this ebook is great for beginning bloggers, who may be starting from the ground up; but I found that it’s also helpful for people who started blogging awhile ago but may need a “check-up” to see how they’re doing, or possibly learn some new things to take them to the next level. Thanks again, Glen… and thanks, Lisis, for sharing Blogging Blueprint here.

Hi Lisis,
What’s this with all the older-folk talk? You are kidding, right? Please tell me that you are kidding or do I need to go into my spiel about how age is a matter of mind. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.
BTW, I read the ebook a few days ago and Glen definitely did an awesome job.

Question 1 : Who is Alison?
Question 2 (with answer) : Do you successfully spin? Absolutely. That’s why I keep coming back for more. LtLtL Love the Lisis take on Life.
Greatest Blogging Challenge : Inspiring meaningful back and forth in the comments. It seems several folks just hit and run. And we’d rather have the opportunity to engage. Are we being naive? Does this sorts of conversations evolve with time? Any recommendations?
Thanks for the recommendation. Hank and I have yet to read any official documentation about the art of blogging, so this should make for a good read.
Nelia´s last blog ..Is Your Relationship an Illusion? An Interview with Robert Scheinfeld
Hey, everyone! Thanks for all the fun (and off topic) discussion about anything and everything, while I was at the pool.
Nelia, Alison is the other half of my brain… and this blog. I’ve known her since college and she’s pretty much the reason this whole thing exists. Without her, I’d still be writing in my pen and paper journals. You can read a little more about her in the About Me page (since she’s pretty much part of ME).
As for the comments thing… that’s a tough one, young lady. There are SOOOO many blogs now, and everyone is trying to get all over the blogosphere to comment and get back links, that it’s almost impossible to carry on a conversation. Every once in a while we luck out and find a spot or a post that comes alive.
Fortunately, one of those spots seems to be Fellowship Fridays at Q4B. This place is getting to be like Cheers (where everbody knows your name). As soon as I can figure out how, I’ll start serving beer on Fridays.
Have a Great Weekend, everyone!!!!
Hello, Nelia. I am a figment of Lisis’ imagination, otherwise known as FairyBlogMother. I am the other half of Lisis’ brain, and a technical dilettante. Nice to meet you!
Lest you really start to believe Lisis is a little “out there,” I sometimes admit to being a real person. I live on the opposite side of the country so as to remain at a safe distance. : )

Alison : Nice to meet you as well. If you have an extra fairy dust, Hank and I have a few wishes…
Lisis (and Alison) : Giving credit where credit is due. Lisis, I mentioned some time ago that I adored this Fellowship Friday. So I did what any adoring fan would do. Stole it. I hope you find our efforts a worthy compliment of and to your own.
Lisis : I love being referenced as a “young” lady. Thank you.
Nelia´s last blog ..Saturday Pillow Talk : Nagging
My dear, sweet Nelia (and Hank)… by all means, steal away. Although I haven’t stated it anywhere on this blog, I’m operating under Leo’s UNcopyright principle here. Feel free to use anything I’ve done in any way that helps you or others.
I hope your Fellowship Fridays will become as cozy as this one has. Some Fridays I feel like every blogger I know is sitting in my living room, or hanging out around a campfire. Anything we can do to foster a spirit of cooperation and collaboration seems like a great idea to me.
So.. I’ll see you at your place on Friday!
Actually, we were slightly more considerate with the steal. And besides, I can only be at one house party per night. It’s Pillow Talk Saturdays and please bring your Sereni-tea.
Nelia´s last blog ..Saturday Pillow Talk : Nagging
Oh, Yay!!! Pillow Talk Saturdays sounds fabulous, ’cause Fridays are pretty busy for me. I’m looking forward to it!
