Inspiration from A Bee Movie: Nothing is Impossible

bee 490x339 Inspiration from A Bee Movie: Nothing is Impossible

According to all known laws of aviation,

there is no way that a bee should be able to fly.

Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground.

The bee, of course, flies anyway.

Because bees don’t care what humans think is impossible.

*

I recently saw A Bee Movie for the first time and was struck by this passage, narrated at the beginning. We can all learn something from bees, it seems:

When some “expert” tells you that you can’t do something… do it anyway.

Nothing is impossible.

What do YOU think? Are you getting tired of people telling you what you can and cannot do? Are you going to pay attention to them? Do you really care what they think is impossible?

    Hi Lisis,
This is just an awesome message! Believe! In ourselves. In the world. In what can be!

I’m leaving in just a few minutes to compete in a triathlon. Had you asked me five years ago if I would ever do one of these, I’d have said “no way! – I can’t swim.” Yet – today I’m off to compete – my second this year – and my fifth in the last four years. And every time I do one of these, I’m reminded of what can be!

    The bee is pretty smart…

Good morning Lsis! Lovely message. I’ve been tired of people telling me what to do and what I can’t do since I was 5. Have a great day :-)

From the realm of music, Tommy Lee of Motley Crue gave us the same message a few years ago. A group of physiologists got together, conducted a few studies, and concluded that it would be impossible for someone to play drums while suspended upside-down. They said that the disorientation of being upside-down, plus the disrupted blood flow, plus the reversed gravity, made it impossible for a human to think clearly enough to provide the kind of coordination necessary to keep time, rhythmically speaking.

So Tommy Lee built this huge contraption that allowed him to practice while playing upside-down. On the next Motley Crue tour (for the Dr. Feelgood album), they had a huge cage built that picked up Tommy Lee and his drum set, brought them out over the audience, and spun him in vertical circles over and over while playing his drum solo.

To quote Christopher Reeve, “Nothing is impossible!”

@ Lance: I’ve told you before you are officially my hero for even attempting a triathlon, but I didn’t realize that not long ago this wasn’t your sort of thing. That makes it even MORE impressive. I definitely believe you can do it, and I wish you all the best!

@ Stephen: I can’t imagine anyone telling YOU what you can and cannot do… I cant imagine anyone would dare! I wonder what happened when you were 5 to make you so fiercely independent?

@ JaY: AWESOME example, my friend. I love it when ordinary mortals prove “the authorities” wrong. Everything is within the realm of possibility. That’s what I try to teach Hunter in science class… just because we can’t imagine it right now, doesn’t mean something isn’t possible.

(And people wonder how Tommy Lee ended up with beautiful women!) ;)

Lisis this post came at the right time. I honestly love the idea that nothing is impossible. It makes me look back to when I cared what people thought about me and say “Why the heck did I even care?”

After watching Lance’s food for thought, this one just made me smile even more.

    What a great Sunday :)

    Hi Lisis,

Thanks for such a short but truly powerful and awesome message. For my whole life, I have been surrounded by people kept telling things like no way we can make it because we are too old, no way we can do this because we are not smart enough and etc…! I have been carried this kind of thought into most of my life that no way I can’t make it and I could only deserve a mediocre life because I am not good, young or talented enough. The thinking made me feel very bad deep inside and kind of hopeless most of the time and full of fearful thinking.

And, it comes one day I realized enough is enough !! stop listening to those people and trust your own heart you can make it. Then, I started to reorganize my life to avoid dwelling into this toxic thinking again! Now, I am preparing for a Marathon run Jan next year, something I would not have thought of at all my whole life!

    Cheers,
    Jen

EVERYTHING is impossible – until we believe otherwise.

  • Lisis July 26, 2009 at 11:28 am

@ John: Well, I’m glad this came at a good time for you. I think Lance and I were on the same page this week… needing a little courage or motivation. I came so close to posting something from The Last Lecture. In the end, the aviation theme got me. I just love lessons that have to do with flying!

@ enthusiasticjen: Congratulations! You and Lance both are serving as quite an inspiration today! I believe you can do it… not that it matters, because the ONLY thing that counts is if YOU believe it (much like Michael alluded to in his comment.)

@ Michael: Always lovely to see your smiling gravatar at Q4B. I’ve been missing you lately. You must’ve read my mind. :)

This was a great subject, Lisis. I haven’t seen the movie, but it sure sounds like it has a great start!

Lance, great job! I didn’t learn to swim until I turned 30 and the reason I finally got in the water was because I wanted to start competing in triathlon. I’ve finished a dozen or so, at this point. Fun, isn’t it?

Jay, I loved your Motley Crue story! Leave it to Tommy Lee…

We definitely shouldn’t believe what people say– only pursue what we believe. Life is just too fun to limit ourselves by naysayers. And, here’s one of my favorites:

“Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?”
    – H.M. Warner, Warner Brothers, 1927.

    Enjoy your day! :)

Only small thinkers have the habit of saying that anything is impossible. The way I feel, sometimes the solutions to some of our biggest problems run so deep that we simply haven’t found the precise means to find them.

For example, could you imagine explaining the concept of a laptop to someone a thousand years ago or I explaining the concept of a black hole to someone 500 years ago? Those people would think those ideas are crazy but clearly there’s plenty of evidence that both of those things exist today.

    Hi Lisis,

I have never understood why some people believe many things are impossible. When I was a kid, someone asked me what did I want to be when I grow up. I told them that I wanted to be happy and the lady looked at me like I had three heads. She expected me to say something more conventional. I never understood her reaction nor the reactions of others when they hear about someone’s dreams or goals. Being realistic is one of the worst things ever…at least to me it is. :)

Loved this post! It’s so inspirational. I’ve never thought about it but it does seem pretty impossible that bees can fly, which really goes to show that even if something seems impossible it may be possible. Thanks for the inspiration!

YES. In more times, when our beloved ones pass out a negative vibe, it is impossible to resist. And it is their thought!

But when it hinders us from exploring ourselves, we are left clueless as that would cause a strain in the relationship. I am yet to find a way to let them know – I would love to struggle to fly instead be in their warm nest.

I remember a story – Courtesy Suki sivam:
A child found a cocoon attached to a tree and saw that a new born butterfly inside the cocoon was struggling to make a way out of it. The child – seeing the butterfly struggling – opted to open the way for the butterfly by opening the cocoon by himself – and that butterfly came out but remained unable to fly for the rest of its life. It was nature’s way of exploring the butterfly, its uniqueness – but it wasn’t to be because of the child.

Never mind even if we go wrong, we are born to make our own destiny – even if it means reinventing the wheel – we learn something out of our own!

Happy Sunday, everyone. Lisis asked me to tell you that she’ll stop in again later… once her internet access is restored.

Jay, I love the Tommy Lee story. I’m going to have to try to find video of that on YouTube! : )

Lisis: I’m new to your site here….Thanks to Micki for “introducing me”. If you break down the word Impossible, it spells I’m Possible…..Thank you for such a positive website! I’ll be visiting often! I hope it’s ok, I’ve quoted you on my facebook page under “favorite quotes”. God Bless!

  • Lisis July 26, 2009 at 7:01 pm

FINALLY! Back online. I guess I found one thing that is impossible, at least it was today: trying to get online when my internet provider is broken. I tried and tried to WILL myself on, but didn’t get very far.

I did, however, get behind replying to comments, so I’ll just thank you ALL for commenting, and welcome my new visitors to Q4B… I hope you’ll stick around so I can get to know you better.

Nanci, I love that spelling thing: I’m Possible! (And now, I’m Online, too!!) :)

    Hi Lisis,
i love the animated movies and the messages they convey to our kids and to us. They are fun to watch and easy to understand…and bee movie is all that great cause of Jerry Seinfeld comedy as well.
The message of “nothing is impossible” is so beautifully shown here. And you have managed to capture the true essence of it in your quoted passage.
I love the fact that whenever i read one of your posts i am instantly in another dimension. I cant thank you enough everyday for you lovely inspiring posts. They do truly make my day.

    Hi there Lisis.
I’m new to your site and I think it’s wonderful…. a breath of fresh air!
Thank You for this thought – Nothing is Impossible.
I’ve found that when I do things from the heart, everything is possible, even if it is scary and confronting.
When I’m not listening to my heart and letting my head run the show, I allow other people to influence my decisions, to have a more important say in MY life, which is absurd really.
So thanks for reminding me that I CAN do anything I choose in life ;0)
