Family Trip, Second Day: Onward to New Jersey
August 6, 2009

Today we are on the road again, for day 2 of our adventure, and super excited because we’ll be meeting Nadia and Jacob this evening!! We are taking pictures as we go along, and I hope to be able to upload a bunch of them when I get the right combination of internet access and time.
In the meantime, I thought I’d share this picture from Jeff’s farewell lunch with his team from work… the work he’s not going back to! Here he is “riding off into the sunset” on a statue of a donkey at the Mexican restaurant. I thought it made a nice addition to my post about my horseback riding misadventures, as it makes me look like the dignified one!
Since I’m traveling, I wanted to share some of my favorite quotes on the subject:
“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” — Robert Louis Stevenson
*
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” — Mark Twain
*
“Traveling is almost like talking with men of other centuries.” — René Descartes
*
“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller
*
“A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.” — Lao Tzu
*
P.S. — Highlights from Day 1

After about three hours of driving, we stopped in middle-of-nowhere, South Carolina, for a picnic by the side of the road. Here are Jeff and Hunter, enjoying some tuna salad and ham & cheddar sandwiches. Hunter said it was his favorite picnic he’d ever been to (probably because we’d starved him for so long!).
This turned out to be the highlight of our first day of driving because North Carolina was one giant thunderstorm with a freeway running through it. I don’t think I saw anything but lightning, tail lights, and water droplets scurrying up the wind shield. We ended up continuing on into Virginia instead of stopping in that tempestuous mess.
In summary – Eight hours of driving, a picnic, a thunderstorm, and a lot of progress. Oh, and THIS thing… I have no idea what it is:

Maybe you know what that thing is?
Do you have any favorite travel quotes, or memories of trips you took?
Thanks!!!

So glad you guys are having a good trip so far! Kinda sucks about the rain, though. Part of the joy of adventure is seeing the sights along the way, so I hope you’ll have more opportunities to do that as the trip progresses.

Hi Lisis,
A couple of quotes I like:
“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.†~ Martin Buber
“If my ship sails from sight, it doesn’t mean my journey ends, it simply means the river bends.†~ John Enoch Powell
The Mark Twain quote you have above is a real favorite of mine!
Enjoy the journey…rain and all. And I’m just imagining right now your time out on the open road…and I’m smiling…

Good morning, guys! Up and at ‘em today, getting packed for day two on the road… “I just can’t wait to get on the road again. Goin’ places that I’ve never been.
Seein’ things that I may never see again.” (Willie Nelson)
Lance, I LOVE that quote about the river bend… niiiiice!
I’m so excited about seeing the Nation’s Capital today, for the first time! Life looks so different from this vantage point. Sometimes it feels like we’re just on vacation, but other times… it feels like nothing I’ve ever felt before. Like we’re suspended in midair, trying to find a place where we’d like to land.
Well… I’ll check in with you guys in a while. Have a GREAT day!!!!
Hi Lisis,
Glad to hear all is well with the start of your adventure!
A Picnic in the middle of no where … has absolutely no stress attached!
Enjoy and savor every moment ….. as there is learning in all happenings! Even the “Storms”

Good morning Lisis!
I’m so excited for your trip. Do you guys sing car songs? I’m sure that regardless things are going smoothly.
Here’s a quick quote:
“The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.†Saint Augustine
And I have no idea what that ‘thing’ in the picture is. Happy travels!

That thing, I believe, is a section of a wind-generated turbine. They are transported in pieces and assembled on-site. Strangely, this is the first time I’ve posted here but I am very eager to see how this adventure unfolds for you and your family. I can relate to SO much of what you’ve expressed over the past months. I truly admire your courage and faith in your own instincts. Be safe!
Hi Lisis,
Jacob and I are so looking forward to seeing you all tonight! Yay!
I have no idea about that truck/bus thing. Wait until we are on the road to NYC, you will see all kinds of stuff!
See you soon!

I enjoyed the quotes you listed, Lisis – and John, I really liked the quote you listed, I hadn’t heard that prior to today.

Hey, everyone! Just wanted to let you know we made it to Jersey and will be meeting Nadia and Jacob in about 45 minutes. Yay!!!
I’m loving that St. Augustine quote… fantastic! Oh, and we thought that huge thing on the road might be a giant washing machine too, so I guess Jacob thinks just like me!
Tomorrow is New York City with these crazy kids, and I can hardly wait!
The thing is a rubbish truck to suck all dirty thoughts of travellers out of their minds.
My favorite trip is going with no plan, a mattrass in the back of the van, kayaks on the roof, enough water and food and then just disappear into nature.
