Adventure: When Things Don’t Go According to Plan
August 10, 2009

“Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” (John Lennon)
*
Life is interesting, isn’t it? It always gets its way. I try to just go with it, be flexible and open minded about outcomes and possibilities. But Life somehow manages to surprise me anyway.
I had my view of flexible plans for the next few weeks… I wouldn’t pre-schedule posts, I would just write along the way and chronicle every little twist and turn of our adventure. Life, apparently, had something else in store.
During our stay in New York with Nadia and Jacob (which, by the way, was a wonderful time for all of us) I somehow hurt my back in a major way. I have no idea what I did, or when I did it, but my back refuses to play along with my plans. We even had to cut our second day short and miss out on several spots I had my heart set on, like Lady Liberty, because I couldn’t walk without excruciating pain.
As you can imagine, I’m disappointed.
I cried most of the way from NYC to Johnstown, where I am now… partly because even sitting is painful, but mostly because I realized my “flexible” plan wasn’t quite flexible enough. Spending any length of time blogging will be very difficult for me right now. Even this post has been written in tiny increments, just to let you know what is going on.
Tomorrow I’ll be sharing the frugality advice from Sherri I promised in one of my earlier posts. After that, Q4B will be on a little break while I recover. Just as soon as I am able, I will post again.
Needless to say, the same applies to email, Facebook, and Twitter. I simply cannot sit at the computer long enough to get anything done. Life has forced me into a virtual fast.
I’m certain there’s a good reason for this… like something in “real” life I shouldn’t be missing out on. So, I’m trying not to let it get to me too much, and embracing the learning opportunity. There must something going on in the next little while that I need to be fully present for. I’m sure I’ll write all about it when I get back online.
For now, all I can say is… I’ll miss you and I hope to be back very soon!
What do YOU do when you set things in motion, but it becomes painfully obvious that Life has other plans?
Thanks,
Lisis

Lisis,
Take care of yourself, that’s what is most important right now. And I’ll look forward to more when you “can” write. Know that I’m thinking of you during this time – for a full and speedy recovery.

You are wise, you’ll find the upside in this situation.Your readers are an understanding and patient bunch.
When life has other plans you just have to make them part of your plans. Not to be a smartypants but maybe it’s a blessing, you just don’t know yet. Enjoy your rest, you deserve it.

Oh poor Lee, yes, take a break, rest, do whatever you have to do to get better so you can come back to us (did that sound selfish?) Sorry, I just love your advice too much!
Just kidding! Hope you get well soon, like you said, there must be a lesson contained in this, so be patient, we love you!

Hi Lisis,
May you get better sooner than later. We so much enjoyed our time with you and your family, it was sad to have it end sooner than expected. That said, it was a perfect weekend except for your back pain.
Your question reminds me of the joke that says if you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans. Plans have to be flexible and things happen for reasons that may never be revealed. Do what you need to do and trust that all your readers will be supporting you along the way. You can definitely count on me and all the others to be there when you are ready.
Huge hug to you!

Hi, Lisis!
I’m pretty new to your blog, but always love your writing – whether comments on other sites or posts you’ve done here. That being said, you’re in my thoughts, as well. I’m sending healing energy your way!
The part of your back you hurt isn’t in the lower section, is it? (Some schools of thought tie that to concerns over money.)
Middle back represents guilt in various forms – stuff from the past.
Upper represents lack of emotional support.
Best wishes for comfort, and the quickest recovery imaginable.

Of course even our best made plans are subject to unforeseeable events. The truth is that much is outside of our control. So when things don’t go my way, I’m reminded of the Serenity Prayer:
One of the benefits (of which there are many!) of having a FairyBlogMother is that you can call on her for help and magic! I’ll send healing energy your way, and in the meantime, I’m here to help with the blog however I can. It’s so nice to see everyone’s faces here, lending support. This is really a great community! Thanks!

Hang in there, Lisis. Do you have ice available? Do you have access to Advil/ibuprophen? Do you have a place where you can get flat and let that back rest?
I’m really sorry about this setback; back pain can be just so awful. The good thing is that we’re all out here pulling for you, and if you need to take a break, take it. We’ll be patiently waiting. You have such a hero attitude; I am learning a lot from you.
This is almost too weird, but I wrote my most recent post about back pain (did I channel you??). I hope it can help you, and please feel free to email or call me if I can help you in any way.
Take care, Li.

I sympathize. I know people with back problems and I know it is frustrating. My demons manifest differently, in periods of low energy and insomnia. Accept, release the emotions around it, and expand awareness–and it becomes just a part of the entire fascination of being alive.
Take the time you need to recover. I look forward to your adventure when you write again.

In the wise words of 80s cheese-gods Journey, “Be good to yourself.”
Take care of yourself, rest relax, and take some time to heal. Everyone will still be here when you’re better.
Sending you lots of positive healing energy….

Lises- Like the others here, my thoughts are with you, and I will try and send healing energy!! Maybe you need one of those 70s-looking wood-beaded car seat covers to massage you as you journey:-)?? As for your question, my summer has definitely been along these lines – the best-laid plans blown to bits – and I think I pretty much did the same thing you are doing. Cried and then got on with it, and accepted I needed to just use this time for something other than what I had planned. And it has really been an amazing summer in that way, so I am sure it will be that way for you on this trip too. – Lisa

I sympathise about your back. I slipped a disc 20 years ago, and know what back pain is all about. Hope you feel better soon.
I love adventures, and so does my fiancee. We love going out for the day and taking a walk, just seeing where we end up and very often having lovely surprises.
Last week we went out into the forest and came across a group of deer led by a white deer. We had gone a long way off the beaten path, where nobody usually goes, so it was just us watching the deer, and also some wild ponies.
I hope we never stop having adventures.
