Forget Resolutions, Live for Today
December 31, 2009
Please Note: This is a guest post from Henri, a passionate new blogger who shares “Lifestyle Ideas For Conscious People” at The Wake Up Cloud.

A Toast: To New Beginnings!
Each year we begin anew, but does it really work that way? A lot of people make new year’s resolutions, but how many of them actually stick? The majority probably are forgotten within a few weeks.
What makes these promises stick? Do we have to be jolted by an accident or even be threatened by death to really want to change? I believe most people need something to slap them in the face and remind them that we are here for a reason.
We all have a purpose. We all have something to share. Let the coming year be one of sharing and connecting with others, because is there anything else? In the past year, this is something I’ve started to realize more and more.
Instead of chasing money and amassing more material wealth, I have started to focus on what I can give and it is slowly changing my life. The joy that comes from giving, sharing and making connections with people is amazing.
With the internet, you can connect with almost anyone. The beauty of having your own presence online is that people find you. I recently started my blog and I am already receiving e-mail from people I would’ve never met otherwise.
Looking Back
It’s amazing how much your life can change in a year. In the beginning of this year I was still a professional poker player making a living playing cards. It was slowly eating up my soul. When I began playing poker in 2004, I was passionate about the game and I was hungry to learn how the game was played.
One of the main reasons I started playing poker was to get out of the whole 9-5 thing, I wanted to be free and this was my out. I was washing boxes in a warehouse a summer in 2004 when I heard that a friend of a friend had made $500 playing online poker. That’s when I thought “If he can, I canâ€. I was in it mostly for the money, but I realized that there was a very interesting strategic aspect to the game.
In the last few years as my heart was pulling me in another direction, I kept playing and going against my intuition. I was afraid of abandoning poker because of the money I was making. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to make a living doing something else.
I think this is a common theme for everyone in their life when they are transitioning from one thing to another. Fear of the unknown is a big stumbling block for most of us. It took me a few years to reach this breaking point and really say enough is enough. I do not want to keep playing poker and have money if I cannot be happy.
That’s when I started building websites about topics I was passionate about. This was in the beginning of the year. As time went on I discovered that I had fallen into a pattern of making money again. Although I was heading in the right direction, I was still not at the place I wanted to be.
This is what gave birth to my blog the Wake Up Cloud. It is what I am truly passionate about right now. It allows me to share and connect. I encourage everyone to have their own blog and share their thoughts. You don’t have to make money doing it. It is an amazing tool to connect and it opens doors for you.
Looking Forward
As my whole being shifts from one state to another, so does my external reality. I will be moving to another country and working harder than ever to get my blog off the ground. Whether or not I will be doing the same thing for the rest of my life I do not know.
In the coming year I will be sharing what I know, making connections and following my heart as much as possible. I am currently making my living off of my niche websites, but I would like to shift my focus towards my blog and be able to provide so much value that I will be able to make a living from it.
Luckily, I do not require a lot of money to live comfortably, so that is a goal that is more than achievable. I am surprised at how much money people think they need to live comfortably. I live a very simple lifestyle, yet I feel I have everything I need.
Simplifying your life allows you to work less, worry less and enjoy life more. This means that even if you can only make a small living doing what you love, it might just be enough if you live within your means. After all, the best things in life don’t have a price tag.
Living For Today
Something I discovered this year is that we have to learn to trust our feelings. If you’re living for the weekends and working a job you hate, you have to start taking responsibility. You alone are responsible for your circumstances.
You can always start working on something you love while working the job you hate. There’s no need to jump face first into a deep black hole, although that might be fun, the results might not. There will never be a perfect opportunity to do what you love. The stars will not align, so start now and you will see amazing things happen.
What about YOU?
What will you be starting this new year? Do you get stuck looking back? Or worry, looking too far ahead? What stops you from getting started on something new?
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Hey, Henri! Happy New Year to you, too!! I hope you are planning to stop by throughout the day and reply to comments. I’m sure there will be plenty of questions for you… like Gordie, here. I’ll let you address him.
(Hi, Gordie!)
Interested to learn that you were a professional poker player before, Henri. What do you think is a bigger gamble, poker or getting out of the rat race?

Gordie´s last blog ..Look, Mom! My Blog’s Sprouting Pubes!
That’s a hard question. I don’t think poker is a gamble if you know what you’re doing and are honest with yourself. I don’t think getting out of the rat race is a gamble when you know what you’re doing and are honest with yourself.
You know?
Lisis,
Hey, what a great guest you have here today!
Henri,
Awesome stuff! I’m drawn to what I have found too – this idea of making connections, deep and meaningful connections – from words shared through a computer. When we can really find those things that touch us deeply, our passion shines through. And that’s what really makes the connections so good, being there with others who “get it”. Here’s to a great year ahead!
Lance´s last blog ..Sunday Thought For The Day
Hey, Lance! I had a dream last night about a really big project, where we went out in search of bloggers from every country. We created this giant map, with links to each blogger, so we could always quickly find anyone in any particular country.
This huge network could then work together on all sorts of global projects to improve the world.
Sounds like a plan for 2010, huh?
Meaningful connections are awesome. Even though it’s words (sometimes video) through a computer it is still something that can change our lives. As long as we are authentic and passionate, the right people and circumstances will show up in our lives. That is what I believe.
Lisis, that sounds like an excellent plan for 2010. Let’s make it happen

Hey Lisis! HAPPY NEW YEAR’S EVE!
Thanks for introducing us to Henri. Happy New Year’s to you too, buddy. Great post about how you’ve drastically changed your life. Not surprisingly, all it took was a little risk and a little action. It takes guts to go after what you want, instead of accepting what so many have before you. But once get the guts needed to break free of what’s holding you back, the sky’s the limit.
As a matter of fact, I’ve already taken action. Hopefully, I’ll be able to share the results of that action with confidence in the year 2010.
Henri and Lisis, take care. See you on the other side – get off the net and spend time with whom you’re closest before the NYE countdown

It’s funny how everything seems scarier than it really is. Work through your fear and do it anyway and you’ll see that a lot of things seem to just fall in place, especially when you follow your passion and purpose in life.
Killer post, Henri! (and big thanks to Lisis for letting you post here)
Although, I must say this: we must live for today while also being conscious of the repercussions of our actions in the future. We can’t just live recklessly day-to-day and sabotage ourselves in the process by making rash decisions that are taken in the moment. But at the same time, we can’t constantly live with an eye to the future; a balance must be struck between living in the now and not screwing up our future.

Hey Brett!
Yup, yup, I hear you. Of course, be responsible and live in the now. That’s common sense for most people, I hope!
Now it’s time to rock 2010!
I enjoyed your thoughts on happiness and purpose. Sometimes we think when we take a job or make a career move we assume it is forever. When in fact we get what we need from it in a season.
Life is change. Each experience can help prepare us for choices that will be available as we progress through life’s journey. We certainly have the power of choice and don’t take advantage of it as we should. Many of us were raised with the idea of getting a good job and do everything you can to keep it. Or, choose a career and stick with it. It is scary to change jobs and careers as those are big things. They are the important ones and what we do for a living takes up a great deal of our time. You are correct, we should find joy there.
Take a risk and have an extraordinary 2010.

Hi Lisis and Henri,
I totally agree with all that you wrote, Henri. We are responsible for our circumstances and life can change in an instant. We are the creators of our reality and life is so much more amazing than people realize. Nothing is impossible. You just have to follow your inner voice, do what is required and everything always does fall into place!
Happy New Year to both of you! 2010 will be even more awesome!

Hi Henri. I always love reading posts like this, especially when it comes to where a person came from and how they came to be who they are right now. It’s crazy how you started out washing boxes, playing poker, then going into the blogging field.
Ultimately, I think you’re right though. If we make life more complicated than it is, than we will always be lost in a search for happiness. Living life for today, for each day, and taking it step by step will make it easier and happier for us. Hope 2010 will bring you and Lisis much joy and happiness!

Wow…I am glad I found you. 2009 is about endings as well as beginnings. I find myself ending my 17 year marriage, because I have got to follow my heart. Instead of looking at it as the worst time in my life, I choose to see it as the most empowering! I am afraid, but I am excited…I am sad, but happy to know that I am doing what is right, not just for me, but for my children, and for my husband as well.
I have no resolustion for this year…except that I plan to follow my own intution…let things happen as they are intended…stop fighting my own desires…and keeping my head up! This is the beginning of a new life for me…and I am thrilled to be on this journey.

Starting now is everything. Make some mistakes. Be just a bit afraid, or very afraid. That’s what ultimately gets you from here to there and what keeps you going.
I am working hard at facing fears and actually trying new things every day of my life and seeing how far I can go just because I can!
When life has other plans you just have to make them part of your plans. Not to be a smartypants but maybe it’s a blessing, you just don’t know yet. Enjoy your rest, you deserve it.
