An Anniversary, a Thank You, and a Promise

Date January 5, 2010

anniversary 490x299 An Anniversary, a Thank You, and a Promise

Exactly a year ago, I published my very first post, How Many Souls On Board?

One of the early posts that really set the tone for my approach to life and my message to the world was, Choosing to See the Good. I became convinced that every life, every place, every job, every situation has positive and negative aspects, and that finding happiness depends on being able to choose the aspects we focus on.

I then started a Spirit of Adventure series on Monday mornings, to try to encourage readers to cultivate excitement in their lives, at any level. Great adventures, simple excursions, and a child-like view of the world can do wonders to spice up an otherwise dismal existence.

New friends came along and joined this nascent community; page views and comments increased; suddenly the blog had a life of its own! This concept fascinated me, enthralled me, captivated me, and I became a bit obsessed (is there such a thing?) I started watching stats, and worrying about trend lines, page rank, and seeking validation… “Which number tells me if they like my writing, if they like ME, if I am worth anything?!”

I was posting every day, and my emotions were ALL over the place. The self-imposed stress was starting to get to me, and then I did something a little bit crazy (in hindsight). I decided to turn off comments Tuesdays through Thursdays. Those were the days when I posted more personal stuff, the sort of posts that made me cry as I wrote them, and that I worried would not be well-received.

I needed a little space to find my balance once again… the balance between my real life and my new, unexpected, virtual life. Thankfully, Quest for Balance readers (you) understood and respected my need for a little breathing room. You stuck around, even through my quiet phase of introspection. You waited patiently, not judging me, while I sorted myself out.

One day, I had a big heart-to-heart talk with my blog.

I could breathe again.

Then my husband and I took a Giant Leap of Faith, leaving his corporate job (our only source of income) in search of a more authentic life. We had no idea what that would look like; we had no Plan B. It was exciting, and scary, and once again, YOU were supportive every step of the way. At one point things got so confusing, the blog went entirely silent for a while.

But you didn’t leave me.

You waited, and emailed, and checked on me, and gave me the strength to keep going.

For that, I THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart.

Then it happened. I unloaded everything that was on my mind in a little rant I called The Passion Paradox, and everything changed. I started to see blogging, and people, and purpose in a whole new light. And I realized…

I can do some good in this world on my own, but together, we can make a HUGE difference.

When we cooperate and collaborate, across blogs, across borders, across all forms of communication, there is no limit to what we can do. I think it’s extremely important that we work together, get to know each other, and find ways to help each other get where we are going.

If I may ask, what troubles you?

When you read personal development blogs, or self-help books, what is it you seek? What do you struggle with the most? What currently keeps you from being happy?

My promise to you is, I will do everything I can to help you get through your challenges, or help you find the right person for the job.

This year is all about YOU, and how I can help you make life simple, enjoyable, and serenely balanced.

Oh, Christopher! You have NO idea how grateful I am to this community. I would have quit blogging many times, were it not for several people I met right here. Not only that, but even my own life, outside of the blog, has been so enriched and fulfilled by all of these wonderful connections.

I’m really glad that you have come to be a part of this community as well. Thank You!!! :)

Hey, Gordie! You have no idea… I am one drama mama from time to time. Try to imagine, if you will, how much Ali has had to put up with over the course of these twelve months! That woman is a saint, I tell ‘ya! ;)

I think you got here just in time for the good stuff!

      • Alison | Quest for Balance January 5, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Twelve months? What about the 17 years or so before THAT?!

Lots of people call me names, but “saint” isn’t usually one of them. ;) I think FairyBlogMother suits me well!

Good points… all of them. Thanks for putting up with me!

    Lisis,
Happy One Year!!! It’s been so, so good getting to know you over a good chunk of this past year, and know that you are a shining light of goodness and love out into the world.

So, you know what I really love about being here and about YOU, Lisis? You have this great mix of honest sincerity and heart, along with fun and chuckles. It’s a mix that I love! And I believe, very much, that is your soul shining through in the words you share.

So, as you began your second year in this great big world wide web, know that you have touched my life in immeasurable ways…and I am deeply grateful.

Thank you, Lance! You are definitely one of the good samaritans that has pulled my heart out of the ditch on more than one occasion. I am so grateful that you have been here all along. In fact, I can’t imagine this journey without you.

I’m really thankful for the feedback, too, because I’m determined to make this year all about my readers, and to find ways to give them what they want (and need). Time to be the best ME I can be! :)

Am I the only one who is giddy thinking of Lisis catering to my every need? Is Alison included in this package deal?

On a serious note. This blog, your courage and your hospitality is beyond inspiring. It’s relevant. Thank you, Lisis. I’ve no doubt Year 2 will be phenomenal.

    Now, back to me.

Hmmmm. What troubles me? Capacity. Consistency. Finding the right balance between urgency and detachment.

***Off to brainstorm longer list to take advantage of this one time offer.***

This is why I love you… you read the fine print and jump on any opportunity to take advantage of me! Oh, and yeah… I’ve thrown Ali in too… it’s a package deal. She doesn’t know it yet, but she will. ;)

By all means, take your time creating a comprehensive list of your needs. Here, at Q4B, we aim to please!

    • Alison | Quest for Balance January 5, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Nelia, this is a buy-one-get-one-free deal. You just have to decide which one of us is worth “paying” for. ;) I’ve always thought of me and Lisis together as “the dynamic duo”. Some days we’re more dynamic than others, but between the two of us, we know how to get things done! Thanks for joining us along the way, and thanks so much for answering the question we posed above.

Can you elaborate a little on the challenges you mentioned? By “capacity”, do you mean there’s not enough of you to go around? Or that you take on too much? In which areas do you feel you lack consistency? (I’m sure a lot of us feel the same way!) And what things give you a sense of urgency? These are great areas to explore, and I’d like to do that right along with the rest of our community.
Ailson | Quest for Balance´s last blog ..An Anniversary, a Thank You, and a Promise My ComLuv Profile

      • Nelia January 5, 2010 at 10:19 pm

Not enough to go around is an issue. But rather than focus on limiting my contributions a.k.a. simplifying, I’d rather focus upon increasing my capacity.

Consistency, I’ve discovered, is a behavioral management issue that effects every part of my life. In fact, I’ve dedicated my entire blog to this singular issue. I’d love Q4B insights and recommendations to add to my repertoire.

I know some folks have a problem with it, but I’m actually a huge proponent of urgency. But I’m also discovering incredible value in detachment. My challenge is getting these two to play nice together. Again, any Q4B insights and recommendations would be most appreciated!

Thanks, Alison, for taking the time to dig deep. I look forward to seeing what y’all come up with!

        • Alison | Quest for Balance January 6, 2010 at 12:00 am

I think the key to increasing capacity (given the 24 hours we all have in a day) is to track where you are spending your time, prioritize the important things, and let the unimportant or “not urgent” things fall away. Just as we sometimes fritter away our money on trivial things (and then wonder where it all went), we do this with our time as well.

I read an interview recently (I wish I could remember who it was with!) in which the person being interviewed said “Saying ‘No’ is the greatest gift you can give yourself.” Learn to detach from the unimportant so that you can embrace the important. Learning to let go is very freeing. I’m not the best at it myself, but I am trying.

About consistency… I’m not sure that consistency for its own sake is something I’d embrace, but consistency for efficiency’s sake is good. Because others learn to rely on us based on our previous, predictable behavior, perhaps consistency is one of the keys to building solid relationships. I’m going to check out your blog to read more about consistency. Thanks!

          • Nelia January 6, 2010 at 5:57 pm

Wow. That is mind-blowing! I crave consistency like I crave a chocolate and toffee super-sized cookie. I can’t imagine not craving consistency, nevermind questioning its value. Isn’t that crazy?

Because I haven’t achieved consistency (at least not directed and positive consistency), I’m not yet in a position to judge its value. But perhaps when I get to the other side of the mountain, my craving will abruptly end. Thanks to you, I’ll at least think to ask whether the craving was justified.

This time next year I’ll report my findings.

        • Lisis January 6, 2010 at 9:10 am

Hey, Nelia! I’m thrilled to see Ali joined in here to cover for me while I was off galavanting (aka: hosting my brother and his family). You’ve definitely tapped on one of the great balance debates… whether to do MORE or LESS in order to feel like you’ve done enough.

Either way, as Ali mentioned, you first should determine what your priorities are, and eleminate all non-essentials. Even if you are trying to fit more into your day, you don’t want to waste your time on distractions.

I’ve noticed some people naturally feel more comfortable in an environment where much is getting done (they can’t really sit still, like my hubby). Others pare down to the absolute minimums (like me) and revel in inner peace and stillness. Either path is fine as long as you, personally, feel like you are going with the flow that is appropriate for you. If you are stressed out and anxious, or feeling lazy and unmotivated, then something is not quite right.

We definitely should explore this subject further… perhaps we should collaborate on a post about both sides of this coin? ;)

          • Nelia January 6, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Not only did Ali join in, but she brought the fire!

Distractions are no doubt an issue. Reducing such would make for a good “Habit of the Month.” I’ll give it some thought and see if it’s 2010 worthy. It’s definitely 2011 worthy.

I’m definitely fine with not doing a damn thing. So I don’t know that I would be much value on the other side of that particular coin. But maybe if the coin toss involved increasing capacity versus simplifying. And I would love to go toe-to-toe on the Urgency v. Detachment issue.

            • Alison | Quest for Balance January 6, 2010 at 6:53 pm

Nelia, I confess that I’m still not sure exactly what you mean by “increasing capacity”. To me, it sounds like you want the ability to take on EVEN MORE… and just thinking about that wears me out! :) Can you give me an example of what you’d like to accomplish by increasing capacity? Or what this means to you? Thank you. I am intrigued!

              • Nelia January 7, 2010 at 5:28 pm

                That’s exactly what I want!

For me, increased capacity means the ability to make more meaningful contributions. I can’t wait to see what you and Lisis cook up for me. QF4, Year 2? I’m ready to eat!

                • Alison | Quest for Balance January 7, 2010 at 6:42 pm

Actually… I was talking about quantity of contributions (thinking you wanted to do “more”), while you are talking about QUALITY of contributions (you want to do “better”). I get it now… as you said, you want your contributions to be meaningful.

(I need to go back to your blog to see in which areas of your life you want to make contributions. Is it family? Career? Your blog? With friends? With organizations you belong to? Charitable groups? Your community? Or what combination of these?)

This goes back to having only 24 hours in a day (16, really). With those 16 hours each day, we can choose to do meaningless, time-wasting things, or things that have an impact. Everyone needs to rest and recharge, though, so even when striving for accomplishment, we must also allow ourselves time just to sit and think… read a book, relax in a bubble bath, or whatever restores us. It’s all about balance, right?

A friend of mine recently attended a workshop and told me that one of the most powerful messages she took away from it is that in order to have more to give to others, we must first take care of ourselves. It’s like the safety instructions they give you when you fly: put the oxygen mask over your own face, first, then help others nearby. :)

                  • Nelia January 8, 2010 at 6:22 pm

I am talking about quality AND quantity! I’m greedy. Thanks for sharing the wisdom of your friend.

Congratulations Lisis and Quest for Balance! It has been enthralling (great word, think I stole it from your post) to follow your blog, and journey, this year. Isn’t it amazing how the process of blogging itself is a journey? I went through something very similar myself, and learning to just write what I felt I wanted to write, listening to my inner voice, not trying to conform to blogging ‘rules’ or base everything on traffic-growth, really became a sort of spiritual journey in and of itself for me…
As for your question, honestly (you can always count on me for that), I am burned out on personal development and self-help…I am interested in stories…I think true, personal stories from others always make me think and move me, and those have usually been my favorite posts of yours…but don’t let that stop you from writing whatever you want of course! I think that is the great thing about blogging, you can connect with different posts on different days…I myself am not a big storyteller, I am more analytical/philosophical/thematic, so maybe that is why I like story-posts from others so much…
Good luck in your new year! XOXO

Hey, Lisa! You’re right… I can always count on you to be open and honest, and it’s one of the things I love most about your comments and posts.

I’m with you, honestly, I’m a little over-dosed on general Personal Development stuff. It needs to be re-invented, or applied in a different way, or something. I don’t know, but we have too much information and not enough action or improvement going on.

Stories are always my favorites too. I love reading them, writing them, learning about others… how we are alike, and how we are different. I hope to be doing a lot more story-telling this year, highlighting all of these things. I really appreciate your input and will definitely keep it in mind going forward.

      Thank You!

tho I’ve only come here recently, I trust our Vermont connection will have us smiling face to face fairly soon one way or another. Thank you, Steven! I can’t tell you how happy I am that we have gotten to know each other better recently. The cross blog conversation we had about the passion post was truly eye-opening for me. It made me realize that blogging is so much more than our individual little soap boxes. It’s so dynamic, and so alive, and so full of altruistic potential. I really can’t wait to see what this year brings.

    Happy 1st Anniversary!

To answer one of your questions, one thing I struggle with personally is seeing a lot of great, inspiring posts on personal development blogs, and I am able to share some of that advise with others and show them how they can apply it to themselves. As for myself, I can read all of it, but never actually apply it in a way that is beneficial. It’s like a mental roadblock with developing myself. That is something I will need to work on.

      Hey, Kristi!

Thank you for being here on this special day. You’ve brought up a super important issue, and one that I have struggled with, and threatened to quit blogging over a few times: there has to be MORE to this than a few (hundred thousand) inspiring posts. Those of us trying to inspire others can do something MORE. Those seeking inspiration or hope deserve much more than they currently have access to.

I think, Personal Development blogging exploded in 2009, with tons of people joining the movement. Now it’s time to focus some of that energy and dedicated effort so that some actual good comes of it all.

      We’ll get there… together… you’ll see. :)

  • Lori January 5, 2010 at 3:59 pm

    Hey Lisis and Alison, congratulations!

I love the way you put this post together, Lisis. And, you know what? This one post really describes your domain name and blog title/purpose: Quest for Balance. Now, that’s putting your “money” where your mouth is!

You two are a fabulous pair – I know it takes work to make a partnership succeed, whether that be in life, marriage, blogging, or business (I’ve tried several of the aforementioned with varying degrees of success). It seems that the two have figured out how to make your time together shine!

I’m proud to know you both!
I’ll be reading and rooting as long as you’re here – here’s to Q4B 2020!!

Q4B wouldn’t be what it is without your contributions, and I’m happy to think that we helped to inspire another great blog, Jane Be Nimble! :) 2010 promises to be a great year, because it will bring me closer to you. I look forward to spending some time with you “in real life,” and supporting your writing projects.

    Hey Lisis!

I’m still too young, so I wasn’t around when you had your introspective period. However, the reason I read personal development blogs isn’t so much to become better myself anymore (I still do that though), it’s more learning about who’s behind the blog.

Like in this instance I want to know what’s going on with Lisis, how you think and what I can learn from that. Hmm, I guess I am learning in one way or another, we always are ;)

    Happy birthday Q4B!

Lisis, I think your blog was one of the first I ever commented on. I had a fledgling blog of my own, and I set out to make some contacts. Well I hit the jackpot. I believe it was a post about whether the world is really more dangerous this day and age, or if it’s just parents being more protective. In the comments, I saw some very sharp minds, and soon the names and faces became friends of mine.

I’ve met such an excellent collection of people through your blog. We have come such a long way, it’s amazing it’s only been a few hundred days.

Your posts have a calming effect on me; you are much wiser than I. When I am flustered, you know what to say. Thanks to you and Alison for a year of Q4B, and congratulations on hitting a milestone that most never reach. I will see you in the future.

    Congratulations Lisis and Alison!

Your terrific parternship has brought about this fantastic blog and community. Thank you for what you both have brought to the party (honest personal insight, compassion, inspiration, enthusiasm…) and for creating a warm environment for friends to gather (I’m especially thankful to have found other great blogs to read via the authors’ comments on Q4B!)

Just like a baby, not able to move very far & very fast by its own before a year old, this blog has went through its developmental stages. It will be exciting to see what Q4B does as a toddler! Where will its curiosity and explorations take it?

What I seek are the “aha” moments (since I enjoy figuring out why we do what we do) and then to go about consciously appreciating the good stuff while not needing/grasping for it. I also believe that the only person I am responsible for, accountable to and have the ability to change is myself. Hence the name for my blog and tagline ~ Taking Care Of You…because you can do it better than anyone else!

As I’m not the kind to depend on others too much for taking care of me, I can’t think of a thing to say regarding what you can do to help me. Well, except for this: Please keep staying true to yourself, Lisis. I’ve so enjoyed getting to know you for that very reason.

Thank you, Suzanne! You have always been such a caring and supportive member of this family. Like you, I’m really curious to see where this toddler blog goes now. I feel certain that we’ll have the excitement of our first real steps, but we may also trip and fall a few times while we steady ourselves. It amazes me how a blog is born, and grows, and matures… it has a life of its own far beyond the input and intent of the blogger.

I really appreciate your feedback, too. Throughout the comments I’ve gotten a better feel for what this community looks to Q4B for, and I’m thrilled about it. This is going to be a fun year for us all. :)

I’m so glad you said that because one of the things I hoped to achieve early on was to inspire others to be more authentic, more transparent and open and themselves with their readers. Too many blogs are completely generic, with little or no personal touch and feel to them. I find it’s easier to connect with real people than with posts, so it benefits us all, bloggers and readers, when we put ourselves out there and build true relationships.

Thank you for being here! :)

Nadia, it’s so amazing that we met early on in the year and instantly became “family”. Our grand adventure in NYC remains one of my fondest memories of 2009, despite the minor back issue that rained on the end of our parade. I had such a great time there with you guys, and LOVE seeing Manhattan scenes in movies now, ’cause I recognize many of the hot spots. :)

I think you and I are in for a very exciting 2010. I don’t really know what they will look like, but we’re certainly getting better at following our hearts… and that can only lead to great things.

  • Zach Streight January 6, 2010 at 2:49 pm

    Hi Lisis,

I just wanted to thank you for your post. It was very good, and very timely. I started my blog with a sincere desire to simply help people try to be happier and more balanced in their lives. I have only about 6 weeks under my belt and I was already starting to drift towards paranoia about page views, subscribers and comments (or lack thereof). Your post has helped me refocus on why I am doing this and what is really important.

Congratulations on your one year anniversary!

    Thank you!
    Zach

    • Lisis January 6, 2010 at 6:34 pm

Thank you, Zach! Let me tell you, the first year of blogging is an emotionally tempestuous ride, no matter how it turns out. But if your heart is in the right place, it will all work out… even if it isn’t exactly as you planned.

When I got started, I thought I’d be rolling in cash by now. Instead, I’m a million times richer because I’ve formed real, lasting friendships with so many members of this community. Sometimes we can’t even imagine how great things can turn out.

If someone told me now I could make $10K per month from this blog, but only if I gave up the person to person connections, I would NOT take the deal. Being part of a real, loving, compassionate community is priceless.

I’m always available by email or twitter, if you need a boost of motivation. Whatever you do, don’t give up! :)

  • Daphne January 6, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Congrats on your year anniversary, Lisis! I enjoyed reading your recap of the year.

Your question about what I’m looking for is a really important one. I think when I first started blogging, I was looking for a community, for support, for one or two people who would read my posts and would give me a virtual hug or a pat on the back. I was looking for an outlet to talk about things that were very personal and very hard to share with people I know in person.

Now that I have that, I can look towards the other needs I have. I think that the community I have discovered is a huge resource and I want to participate in it, to support other people the way I have been supported, and to keep sharing my experiences in the hopes that my words might help someone else. I seek interactive conversations that challenge me and make me think.

I hope your blog continues to be everything you wanted and more. Best to you in 2010!

I’m looking forward to getting to know you and your blog better in the coming year. Hmmm, what am I seeking, why do I read? Good questions. I think I’m always looking for an emotional connection, depth, meaning, and a lovely way with words. • Hulbert January 6, 2010 at 5:44 pm

Hi Lisis. Congratulations on your one year anniversary! Blogging to me is definitely a challenge. In March, I will be hitting one year so I have a little while to go.

Like you, I think when people first start out, we have no idea what to do. You constantly check your stats, check your comments (I didn’t get my first comment until six months after writing my first post), check your designs, and so on. I remember I didn’t even know the difference between domain name and hosting!

Hindsight is definitely a complete opposite view of what you expect from the beginning. Good job on making it through this year and I wish you much success in the second year of your blog!

    • Lisis January 6, 2010 at 6:50 pm

Hey, Hulbert! I honestly think just making it to the one year mark is HUGE in blogging. So many times during that first year we are tempted to give up (or smash our laptop to pieces!) because we can’t yet understand what it’s really about. It takes time to find our voice, find our groove, and find the people we really want to mingle with. But once that happens… it’s bliss, I tell ‘ya.

It’s all good now, and what makes it so wonderful is having that full appreciation of just how challenging the ups and downs have been. I know you are going to do GREAT, because your heart is in the right place. Best of luck, and if I can help in any way, please let me know. :)

Happy blogging birthday! That’s when I found your blog, right before you turned off comments. Your honesty, openness and sincerity are mind blowing.

What do I look for when I want a book? Well I was just at suZen’s blog and she described a writer that has a new book called, “Wild Love.” Meaning unconditional and oneness love. How exciting is that. I’m looking for people and authors who are on the same path. I have Bryon Katie’s book 1000 Names for Joy and every time I’m beside myself worrying about my adult kids;) I pick it up and read it again. Her answer is always the same:Drop the story you’re telling yourself about the situation.

I don’t know about Kindles and e-books, I need to hold books, highlight them and dog ear the pages. Oh dear the world is changing and I’m stuck in the old! Happy blog b-day again!

I turned off comments, and later cut back on posting, in a fruitless effort to get my “old life” back. Little did I know, that’s like trying to get my childhood back. It no longer exists. Best to embrace what we have now and continue moving forward (except for the Kindle and ebook thing… I say we fight to keep “real” books around!).

      Hey, Vincent!

Thanks, it has been a crazy ride at times, and one that I came so close to quitting on several occasions. I remember thinking, “I don’t have as many page views or subscribers as X,Y, or Z does, and it’s not like I’m making money from this full time job… maybe it’s time to throw in the towel?” LOTS of times I had that little talk with myself.

But somewhere along the way I decided I would never quit just for feeling that way. If I still want to quit a month after that feeling sets in, then… maybe, I’ll quit. And guess what? Within a few days, or a week at the most, the feeling always passes.

Definitely chart your own course, find your own path, and know that it gets a little lonely there sometimes… and that’s OK. Push through the doubt and the fear, because what is waiting on the other side is the satisfaction of knowing you stayed true to yourself and got to your destination YOUR way. :)

  • Earl January 7, 2010 at 11:09 am

What I struggle with is the overload of self-help advice out there and the tendency for the power of such information to become greatly diluted as a result.
