We all have insecurities at one time or another… as parents, as professionals, as people. Most of us are in a constant search for the perfect work/ life balance that allows us to feel good about who we are, and the choices we make.

Recently I did something a little unusual with my insecurities, I exposed them to someone I’d only just met. Christopher Kabamba is a new blogger I stumbled upon a short while ago. I could tell from my first few exchanges with him that he is someone I deeply respect. He has a stillness about him, and an aura of peace and understanding.

In one of his comments he shared this James Allen quote:

Recently I was thinking about how difficult it can be when we feel we need to hide our authentic self from others. We know deep down that the person everyone else sees is NOT who we are. We want them to see us, and love us, for who we truly are; but we dare not risk revealing the truth for fear of being rejected… of losing everything we love.

It suddenly dawned on me that my dear friend, Jamie, has lived most of his life this way, because he is gay in the Bible Belt. Being gay anywhere can be challenging; but being gay in ultra-conservative, intolerant towns can be downright dangerous.

This was an email I received from a reader. I found it to be a beautiful tribute to her father, and know all too well the pain she is going through. I thought maybe, by sharing it here, some of you could help me find the right words to comfort her… even just a little. She told me she wrote this a few months ago, and still has his ashes.

My dad died on the 24th of April, 2009, and I have thought of letting go of his ashes many times in that time but either due to co-ordination of schedules with my mum and sister or my inability to let go, I am faced with possibly letting go today. It feels like my heart, amongst other organs, is being ripped apart.
